Two accounts of how you read other people's minds
You understand other people’s minds by treating their behaviour as meaningful, but there is no settled account of how that happens. Theory-theory says you infer beliefs, desires and feelings by using an implicit model of how minds work. Simulation theory says you understand others by imaginatively running their situation through your own mental system. Direct perception says that, at least in ordinary encounters, some mental states are not inferred at all: they are visible in expression, posture and action. The dispute remains open because each account explains part of social understanding, and none explains all of it.
How theory-theory explains mindreading
Theory-theory treats social understanding as a kind of everyday explanation. You do not need a formal textbook theory. The idea is that you carry a background sense of how beliefs, desires, intentions and emotions usually connect.
If someone reaches for a glass, you may take them to be thirsty. If they search under a sofa, you may take them to believe something is there. You move from visible behaviour to an unseen mental state by using general patterns.
This account fits the way you can understand people whose feelings you do not share. You do not have to feel their fear to grasp that they are afraid. You can reason from what they know, what they want, and what they are doing.
Its weakness is that much social understanding feels faster and less rule-like than this picture suggests. In conversation, you often adjust to someone’s mood before you could state any rule you used.
How simulation theory explains mindreading
Simulation theory starts from a different thought: you understand another person by using yourself as a model. You imagine their situation from the inside, with their aims and limits, and see what response your own mind produces.
If a friend is about to receive difficult news, you may understand their anxiety by imaginatively occupying that moment. You are not applying a detached rule. You are using your own emotional and cognitive capacities to model theirs.
This explains why empathy can feel immediate. It also explains why perspective-taking can improve when you know more about the other person’s circumstances. The better the input to the simulation, the better the likely output.
The problem is projection. Your own reaction may not match theirs. People differ in temperament, culture, memory, values and needs. If you silently substitute yourself for the other person, you may understand yourself more than you understand them.
What direct perception adds
Direct perception challenges the shared assumption behind the other accounts. It says that mindreading is not always a move from outer behaviour to inner state. Sometimes the mental state is present in the behaviour itself.
You do not normally see a smile and then infer joy as a separate hidden item. You see joy in the smile. You hear irritation in a voice. You notice hesitation in a pause. On this view, expression is not a clue left behind by the mind; it is one way the mind shows up in the world.
This account is strongest for face-to-face, expressive situations. It is less clear for hidden beliefs, private plans or deliberate deception. A person’s frown may show concern, but it may not tell you what they believe caused the problem.
Why no account has settled the question
This guide goes one level deeper than the basic theory-of-mind question. Instead of asking whether people can attribute mental states, it asks how that skill works.
The answer may not be one mechanism. You may directly perceive simple emotion, simulate another person’s perspective when empathy is needed, and use theory-like reasoning when the situation becomes complex or unfamiliar.
That mixed picture is why the debate remains alive. Each account captures something real: the structure of reasoning, the feel of empathy, and the immediacy of expression. The unresolved question is how these processes divide the work, and whether one is more basic than the others.
