What the right to repair movement is fighting for
The right to repair movement fights for a simple practical right: when you own a product, you should be able to repair it, choose who repairs it, and get the parts, tools, instructions and software access needed to do that. It is a response to planned obsolescence, where products become difficult to keep in use before they truly need replacing. The movement does not say every repair must be easy or cheap. It says manufacturers should not create avoidable barriers that make replacement the only realistic option.
What right to repair means
Right to repair is about access after purchase. If a phone screen breaks, a washing machine pump fails, or a tractor sensor stops working, the owner should not be locked into one repair channel by default. They should be able to use an independent repairer, a community repair group, or their own skills where the repair is safe and lawful.
That access usually means spare parts, repair manuals, diagnostic tools and software permissions. Modern products are often partly mechanical and partly digital, so a repair can fail even when the physical part fits. If the software rejects the replacement, the owner still cannot use the product properly.
The movement also asks for products to be designed with repair in mind. A repairable product can be opened, inspected, serviced and reassembled without destroying other parts in the process.
The barriers it targets
The first barrier is parts availability. A product may be repairable in theory, but not in practice, if the manufacturer will not sell the needed component or only supplies it inside an authorised network.
The second is missing information. Repair manuals, wiring diagrams and diagnostic procedures tell a trained person how to find the fault and fix it safely. Without them, repair becomes guesswork, even for skilled technicians.
Software locks are another barrier. Some devices check whether a replacement part has been approved or digitally paired. That can protect against unsafe parts in some cases, but it can also block ordinary repair and reduce competition.
Physical design matters too. Glued assemblies, sealed cases and parts fused together can turn a small fault into a large repair. A battery, screen or switch that could have been replaced may instead require heat, force and special tools, raising the risk of damage.
How it connects to planned obsolescence
Planned obsolescence is the broader problem: products are made, supported or updated in ways that shorten their useful life. Right to repair is one answer to that problem because it changes the balance of power after purchase.
If a product can be maintained, its owner has more control. A fault does not automatically mean a new purchase. An independent repair market can also put pressure on design quality, because products that are hard to open, diagnose or service become easier to compare with products built to last.
This is also an environmental issue. Keeping a product in use usually preserves more material and energy than replacing it early. Repair is not a perfect solution, and some products reach a sensible end of life. But a repairable product gives the owner that choice later, not at the first fault.
The direction of policy
Policy is moving towards making repair a normal part of product regulation, not a favour offered by manufacturers. The European Union has taken a leading role through ecodesign and consumer-repair rules, with attention on spare parts, repair information and incentives to repair rather than replace.
Elsewhere, lawmakers and regulators are also looking at repair access for electronics, appliances, vehicles and equipment with embedded software. The details differ by place and product type, especially where safety, privacy or medical risk is involved.
The broad direction is clear: repair is becoming part of how product rights are defined. The unresolved question is how far those rules should go, and how to balance open repair access with genuine safety and security concerns.
