Why your own voice booms when you block your ears

Your voice booms when you block your ears because a sealed ear canal traps part of the sound your skull normally lets out. This is the occlusion effect. Speaking vibrates bone and soft tissue around the ear; those vibrations create low-pitched sound inside the ear canal. When the canal is open, much of that low sound leaks away. When a finger, earplug, earbud, or hearing aid seals it, the sound has nowhere to go, so pressure builds at the eardrum and your voice sounds deeper, louder, and more enclosed. It is the same bone-conduction physics as the wider bone-conduction effect, felt from the inside.

What the occlusion effect is

The occlusion effect is the change in how your own body sounds when the ear canal is blocked. It affects your voice, but it can also make chewing, footsteps, swallowing, or breathing seem louder than usual.

The key point is that the sound is not only coming through the air. When you speak, your vocal tract vibrates. Some of that vibration travels through your jaw, skull, and soft tissue to the area around the ear. The ear canal wall moves slightly, and that movement produces sound inside the canal.

With an open ear, that internally generated sound can escape. With a sealed ear, it is reflected back towards the eardrum. Your hearing system then receives more of your own low-pitched sound than it normally would.

Why the sound is low and boomy

The booming quality comes from low frequencies. Bone and soft tissue carry the lower parts of your voice well, while the higher parts of speech depend more on air travelling through the ear canal.

Blocking the ear does not boost every part of your voice equally. It mainly strengthens the lower, body-carried part. That is why the effect feels like bass, pressure, or hollowness rather than simple loudness.

The seal matters. A loose covering may change the sound only a little. A tight plug or closely fitted device can make the effect much stronger because it leaves less space for the trapped sound to escape.

Where you notice it

You can hear the occlusion effect by putting your fingers in your ears and speaking. Earplugs can do the same thing, which is why your own voice, chewing, or footsteps may seem unusually loud while outside sounds are reduced.

Hearing aids can also create it when the part in the ear blocks the canal. This is why many fittings use a vent, where suitable: the opening lets some low-frequency sound escape and can make the wearer’s own voice feel more natural. The same basic issue can appear with sealed earbuds or in-ear monitors.

In each case, the cause is not mysterious. The blocked ear keeps out some outside sound, but it also keeps in sound made by your own body.

Why it stops when you unblock your ears

The effect fades when the ear canal opens again because the trapped low-frequency sound can leak out. Your eardrum receives less of that internal pressure, and your voice returns closer to its usual balance.

That is also why the effect is a useful clue: if your voice suddenly sounds boxed-in after fitting a plug, aid, or in-ear device, the seal is probably changing the way bone-conducted sound behaves inside the ear canal.
